Kiss Me Once (Kylie Minogue)

EN Kiss Me Once” is the 12th album in the magnificent career of Australian Kylie Minogue. Successor to my favorite album of the artist, “Aphrodite" (2010), the project was released on March 14, 2014, when the artist joined a new record team, the Roc Nation, which the founder is the artist Jay-Z. The idea of the album was to introduce new sonorities to the singer's catalog, such as R&B, but I don't believe that it was something well achieved. For that reason, let's analyze this piece by piece.

The project was released through the single “Into the Blue”, released on January 27, still in a great distance from the release of the album. The single would eventually make a link between albums, and the predecessor was a success and gave rise to a "classic" named “All The Lovers”, so the expectations were high! In my opinion, the transition was very well done, the track brings an interesting beat, accompanied by an excellent production, and the singer's voice sounds incredibly well in the chorus, being in total prominence, not being overshadowed by its instrumental. My heart even speeds up every time I hear her sing the chorus "into the blue”, with her voice getting surprisingly louder as she extends the word "blue” magnificently. In turn, the second selected single was “I Was Gonna Cancel”, which features singer Pharrell Williams in production and composition. I believe it is one of the worst tracks on the album and I think it was one of the reasons it lost any kind of chance of the album being much better received, there was no opportunity at the time to see this track shine, though there were more fantastic tracks on the album that could have much more potential than this one.

Another factor that may not have helped the singer with the project is related to the existence of only two tracks of her own, “Fine” and “Mr. President”, the latter being related to the romance between Marilyn Monroe and President Kennedy. But the album still has some songwriters of quality and success as is the case of Sia, Greg Kurstin and Ariel Rechtshaid; however not always the formulas are exact and work with every artist.

My favorite tracks, in addition to the fantastic first single, are “Les Sex”, “Sexercize” and “Kiss Me Once”, being the last two compositions of the artist Sia, who could be the “savior” of the project, since many critics praised the work between the artists. There is also a music video for the track “Sexercize”.

Despite being an album composed by other artists for the singer, it lacks her charisma and personal touch, after all it is her project, even more so in a new record company, so it is natural to think that she would like to give some kind of contribution, whether in terms of lyrics or even melodies, but it seems that this did not happen. The album may even sound good in its entirety, because in fact that is what happens when we listen to it from beginning to end but, in a society where songs are heard mostly individually, there are tracks that simply do not work, there are even discarded tracks like “Waiting 4 The Sun” and “Voodoo” that deserved to occupy the space of other songs and, in this way, we could have avoided the failure of an era and seen the rejuvenation of an artist.
