EN “Romancing Mister Bridgerton" is the fourth book of the saga Bridgerton from the American writer Julia Quinn, widely recognized for writing historical novels, which currently attracts thousands of readers all over the world. It was published on July 2, 2002, by Avon Books (Harper Collins) and is one of my favorites books in the saga, essentially because it involves my favorite characters who are Penelope Featherington and Colin Bridgerton. When I realized that this story would be centered on the two, I knew perfectly well that I would devour the book rapidly, because I always felt very intrigued by Penelope's passion for Colin.
Julia Quinn revealed some very interesting facts in the development of this book. In addition to writing short excerpts with other characters from other stories and even from other books of different sagas, giving readers the opportunity to review and know more details of these same characters, the writer clarifies that some of the excerpts that talks about Colin's travels and his thoughts, are based on the writer's experiences when she lived a season in these places. The fact that impressed me the most was the “almost" death of a very important character, not only in this book but in so many other books written previously and later also. I'm glad that she did not implement this idea, because this character is one of my favorites of the whole saga.
"I love you with everything I am, everything I've been, and everything I hope to be. I love you with my past, and I love you for my future. I love you for the children we'll have and for the years we'll have together. I love you for every one of my smiles and even more, for every one of your smiles.”
As I mentioned above, this is the love story of Penelope and Colin, the third child of the Bridgerton lineage. Penelope has been in love with Colin, the brother of her best friend, Eloise, since she was sixteen and believes she knows everything about her beloved, a thought she later recognizes as wrong and that is something that worries her too much. Colin is tired of being seen as a charming heartthrob living his monotonous life, without any further recognition and tired of being mentioned in the columns of Lady Whistledown who can't seem to get his name out of her ink feathers. However, when he returns to London, after one more of his travels, he realizes that his life will not be the same when he begins to look at Penelope in a way he had never done before. Only neither of them hoped the secrets they both hide would make their relationship so overwhelming. It is these secrets that will allow this couple to realize if what they feel for each other is true.
From my perspective, the relationship between the two was well developed, and despite Colin's sudden mood swings, something we didn't have in the other books, one realizes that the changes he was undergoing in his head and in his heart might be causing him some discomfort and, like any human being, we tend to be more impulsive and truthful with those we love.
I loved the book, I loved the author's “the great revelation”, although it was already a little implicit from the beginning of the book. I like the way the writer romances the feelings of all the Bridgertons as if love is something very difficult to achieve and a landmark when it happens.
