PT Para quem não sabe, existe uma série bastante conhecida baseada neste livro.

Para mim, o livro e a série têm muitas diferenças, o que pode fazer muita confusão para as pessoas que gostam de ver a história retratada de forma semelhante. Com isto quero dizer que a série é baseada neste livro, mas foi desenvolvida para criar mais personagens e enredos que no livro não existem. É raro, mas devo confessar que a série consegue entreter-me mais que o livro conseguiu. O livro prendeu-se muito nas poucas personagens que tem e foca-se mais no romance, enquanto que a série conseguimos caracterizá-la com alguns momentos cómicos, alguns momentos de romance, uma combinação de situações de puro entretenimento.

Mas voltando só ao livro…

“You’re only as young as you feel.”

O livro “Younger” retrata a história de Alice, que apesar de parecer uma mãe jovem sempre dedicou a sua vida à filha, marido e vida doméstica. Já nos seus quarentas, Alice perde o marido e com uma filha já crescida, decide que quer voltar à sua carreira numa editora, contudo entende que com a sua idade, não será fácil que a contratem. Para realizar essa tarefa, decide transformar-se numa jovem de vinte e poucos anos, com a ajuda da sua amiga Maggie, uma artista, que executa um belo trabalho. Na primeira noite desta transformação, Alice beija um homem muito mais novo, o que a faz perceber que o seu plano pode realmente funcionar, e, por isso, decide segui-lo em frente e candidatar-se a um emprego numa editora como assistente. Depois de ser bem-sucedida, Alice vive de forma jovial, com o seu namorado muito mais novo e enganando todos à sua volta sobre a sua idade. Sem querer ser muito spoiler, ao longo do livro percebemos que não é só a idade que condiciona a Alice, mas sim a sua cabeça e a forma como ela decide lidar com a situações que tem de enfrentar.

A escrita é boa e os capítulos são ligeiramente pequenos o que facilita a leitura. Também gostei muito mais da personagem do Josh no livro, o que sustenta a minha ideia de que a série tem um toque muito mais juvenil do que o livro, daí a personagem, a meu ver, ser mais madura do que na série. Ah, e o próprio nome de Alice é alterado na série para Liza, o que reforça ainda mais a minha ideia.

Pessoalmente, eu gostei do livro, e da mensagem que tenta transmitir sobre os problemas sociais relacionados com a mulher, a maternidade e a discriminação de idades em volta disso. São temas sérios que não devem ser levados com leviandade. As pessoas não devem ser julgadas independentemente dos padrões que a sociedade impõe.

The book and the tv show have a lot of differences, which can be very confusing to a lot of people who enjoy seeing the story portrayed in a similar way. In other words, the series is based on the book but it was developed to create more characters and plots that do not exist in the book. It is rare, but I must confess that the tv show managed to entertain me more than the book did. The book focused too much on the few characters that it has and in the romance of the main characters, while the tv show can be characterized with some comic moments, some moments of romance and a mixture of pure entertainment.

But, regarding mainly the book…

“You’re only as young as you feel.”

The book "Younger" tells us the story of Alice, a woman that despite looking like a young mom, had always devoted her life to her daughter, her husband and the domestic life. Already in her forties, Alice loses her husband and with a raised and grown daughter, she decides that it is time to return to her career in a publishing house. However, she understands that because of her age, it will not be easy to get hired. To do the task ahead, she decides to transform herself into a young woman in her twenties, with the help of a friend, named Maggie, who is an artist and performs an excellent job. On the first night of the transformation, Alice kisses a man much younger than her, which makes her realize that her plan can work. So, she carries on with it and applies for a job in a publisher as an assistant. After being well-succeed, Alice lives in a very joyous way, with a boyfriend of twenty-five and deceiving all the people around her about her age. Without trying to give too much spoiler, throughout the book, we start to understand that it is not only the age that restrains Alice, but also her mind and the way she decides to deal with the situations she faces.

The writing is good and the chapters are slightly small which eases up the reading. I also enjoy much more the character of Josh in the book in comparison with the tv show, which supports my idea that the tv show has a certain juvenile touch and the book has not, giving that character a more mature look. Also, the name of the main character Alice was changed to Liza in the tv show, reinforcing even more my vision.

Personally, I enjoyed the book, and the message that tries to convey about social issues regarding women, motherhood, and age discrimination around them. These subjects have to be taken seriously and should not be treated with carelessness. People must not be judged regardless of the standards imposed by society.
